Disclaimer: This post is not intended to kill the dreams of any future Mathematicians or Biologists. It is created with the sole purpose to engage like minded people in intelligent conversation. I have to get some things off my chest. So lately, one of my biggest pet peeves is math. I’m doing terrible in the class and the final is like a month away. I’m sorry, but when the FUCK do I need Algebra? I have a really hard time devoting myself to something I find completely useless. I had to slave over that shit in High School, why am I chained to it in college again? Wasn’t four years of misery enough for you Pythagoras!? Why are there Imaginary Numbers!? What, we don’t have enough real numbers? If you want to crunch numbers all day and that makes you happy, great. For me, creating, writing and media makes me happy, not solving formulas and trying to understand how to solve an equation that’s like a Quadratic Equation, the same way you solve the Quad!!! Why!? It’s like it, it isn’t the same! And you will never be able to get across to me, how plotting points on a coordinate plane is going to contribute to my work experience or life.
Secondly, this leads me to discuss prerequisites and general courses. To have a BA or ASA or anything better than a certificate, you have to take general classes in college. While these are helpful to stall and figure out what you really want to do (because most degrees or programs require them), they are boring, tiresome and most times completely irrelvant to your career or field of study. I’m studying Public Relations and Music Business supposedly, in order to get a minor in PR and BA in Music Business: Arts and Entertainment Management. However, can you please explain to me, how Algebra, or Biology, or Contemporary Humanities, will help me be more of an asset to a management company, a record label or PR firm? I’m very interested on hearing some opinions here. Biology is the study of how life forms, reproduces and exists. I understand why I have to take Psychology, to be a PR rep, you must understand how people think, in order to taylor situations to certain demographics and clientele. I however, can not wrap my head around why the hell I would need Biology. But, I have to pick a natural science, and honestly, Chemistry, and all the other ones can go die. So I have to take the lesser of evils and go with Bio.
Now that I’ve got that off my chest, I can move forward to another pressing issue. For those of you who know me, you most typically understand that I find myself to be a creative soul, therefore 9 to 5 jobs are not (most of the time) my idea of fun. However, I am human and I need to make a livelyhood. The current job market, as we know, is in shambles. People with Master’s Degrees are running the front lanes at Wal-Mart. Explain to me then, why when I visit a store, most associates couldn’t help a rock off the floor!? If they are so smart and companys are only hiring people with that level of intelligence, then why the hell do they act so incapable of doing their job!? I need a job! Yet, they hire compelete idiots and while I’m not perfect and don’t have years of job experience, I am a kind soul with manners, responsibility and drive. I do not understand how I can tirelessly fill out applications and revceive no call backs, while people with less drive, less responsibility, a complete lack of manners and a general DGAF attitude, can land a job. Finally, I want to thank you for reading my rants. I can’t believe you read all that. I just want to say, I am not a negative person, I just find ways to get things off of my chest. This was one way.
I want to know what you think. What terrible/unnecessary classes are you forced to take? What is your major? Any tips on getting hired?
